When can you eat a grilled cheese sandwich? How about for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, late night snack, in between snacks…etc. You can eat grilled cheese any time, and bring it with you anywhere. That’s why we love it right? We love it for the creamy rich saltiness of melty gooey cheese, flowing through two, skillet-pressed, pieces of bread that have been soaked in butter. So, how do we make this American staple, brilliantly twisted and Veganized? Simple…we turn to the folks at Field RoastField, to make our lives easy and delicious.
Now that we have our cream products down, we’ll just need a really good skillet pan, bread, and some basil to complete this quick and dirty snack, if you’d like to call it that.
There are some tricks to get the Chao Cheese movin’ right and what I’ve found is to microwave them (2 slices for 45 seconds.) Sometimes, I would quickly lay the bread, cheese side down, onto the pan and crisp it up before putting it in the microwave, but if you’re in a hurry, it’s not that necessary of a step.
If you have to lift the corners to check every now and then, do that because you don’t want to burn anything here. Otherwise, you’ll be scrapin’ off burnt-ass-toast in your kitchen sink, trying to salvage your sandwich like a scrub who can’t get their shit together.
Vegan Grilled Cheese Sandwich
We all love a grilled cheese sandwich for its simplicity and nostalgia. It would be a shame if we couldn't make this in the plant-based world wouldn't it? Oh, but we can, and it's better than you'd ever imagine.
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread
- 2 slices of vegan cheese
- 1 tbsp vegan butter
- 4-5 basil leaves
- 1/8 tsp paprika
Directions
- Rinse basil leaves. Pat dry with paper towel and thinly slice.
- Place a slice of cheese on each piece of bread and place in microwave for 45 seconds, or until outside edge of cheese starts to melt and crinkle.
- Heat skillet on medium-low, and add 1 tbsp of vegan butter.
- Place slices of melted cheese bread onto skillet, face side up, and spread basil evenly over both sides of bread. Sprinkle paprika over cheese and let bread stand for 1 minute.
- Stack bread on each other and press down firmly. Brown each side for approximately 1.5 minutes per side.
- Cut in half and serve!
